"We especially love how San Diego's KYNAN tears into 'Purple Rain,' shredding like a teenage Prince alone in his bedroom studio." - ALTERED ZONES - KYNAN on ALTERED ZONES
"Sorta Sun Araw, sorta Portishead sounding... his style though is constantly changing seemingly every day" - Kick Kick Snare - KYNAN on Kick Kick Snare
"Joel 'Kynan' Williams' soulful brand of horn-embellished, bedroom psychedelia has been gaining favourable comparisons to the likes of Beirut. Nothing to be sniffed at of course, but perhaps this is doing the 18-year-old Californian a disservice? The range and scope of his work " from blissed-out, twisted electro through to delicate guitar balladry " is more reminiscent of Prince in his adventurous, mid-80s heyday" - Snipe (London) - KYNAN on Snipe London

KYNAN
Location: Teenville, USA
KYNAN was born Joel Kynan Williams, Jr. and grew up in the Hollygrove neighborhood of New Orleans, Louisiana. KYNAN was born when his mother, a chef, was 19 years old. His parents were divorced when he was 2, and his father permanently abandoned the family. KYNAN enrolled in the gifted program of Lafayette Elementary School and in the drama club of Eleanor McMain Secondary School. He wrote his first rap song at age eight. In the summer of 1991, he met EJ Binns, rapper and owner of Grizzly Records. KYNAN recorded freestyle raps on Binns's answering machine, leading him to mentor the young KYNAN and include him in Grizzly-distributed songs. When he was 12, he played the part of the Tin Man in his middle school drama club's production of The Wiz. At age 13, he accidentally shot himself with a .44 caliber gun, with the bullet missing his heart by two inches. At McMain Magnet School, KYNAN was an honor student, but he dropped out at the age of 14 to focus on a musical career.
